KIRKUS REVIEW

One of the best in an excellent group of song books, this makes no pretense of being primarily decorative, but holds closely- in text and music- to the subject- Jerome Kern and his songs. There are fifty of the best, and few will quarrel with the inclusions, which stem back to the days of the Bolton-Wodehouse-Kern combination and forward to the screen musicals with Kern scores. It is a rich array, stressing again the simple, pure line melody characteristic of Kern's music. The text gives a warmly appreciative appraisal of the man and the musician. The piano and voice arrangements are simple enough for practical purposes. And the words follow the score. Spot drawings or reproductions of sheet music covers accent the sources.
