Hippolytus Brandenberg is one of those indescribable invincible Characters: humanitarian, agitator, dialectician, and a supremely likable paranoi-ance who spends most of his time Writing letters. To the head of his company (Metropolitan Life), where he is employed (briefly) with allegations of anti-Semitism; to the Golden Bar restaurant where he had slight difficulties; to the Somali Ambassador at the U.N. and to Betty Crocker for a Somali recipe; to Mao Tse-Tung; to plenipotentiaries of all kinds including the military; to his old friend who has lost his mind (and by the way Hippolytus has the memory of a computer). etc. etc. Mr. Friedman's novel of Hippolytus' fractured activities is accomplished via tapes, files the F.B.I. Harvard, Bellevue, and finally the C.I.A. and you'll find them all pretty funny he's somewhere between a nut and a nudnik and should do fine in a Sellers market.
