A TIME FOR COOKING

One might insert ""good"" before time in the title, for there is zest and imagination in the writing of this excellent cookbook. Along with these facets, there is sound commonsense, as the ingredients and instructions are carefully arranged, the time of preparation and cooking indicated, and the number that will be served suggested. While a ""California slant"" is indicated, this New England housewife found little adjustment needed in application. The section on Appetizers was particularly good on new ideas, and on suggestions of things that could be prepared well in advance. This is true also of the section on soups, on relishes as a special fillip to be added to salads, on aspics and molded dishes. The Casseroles include interesting variants on the usual assortment, and some short cuts that will appeal to weekend hostesses. A good all round book, not all- inclusive, but with that plus quality that makes it an ideal extra cookbook for the limited shelf space.
