This is a surprisingly unimaginative introduction to the problem of animal extinction in the United States. The book is dull in comparison with some of the author's previous writing and in regard to some of the cogent arguments for conservation. It tends to read like an annotated list of mammals, birds and reptiles, especially in the case of Chapter 3 (""A Roll Call of Our Vanishing Wild Friends"") where the title most clearly labels the approach. Its primary value may be as a handbook for school units on conservation, although this subject offers any number of recent books to choose from.
