HISTORY OF THE ROSE

Report repeated from the October 1st bulletin, when scheduled for December publication, as follows: ""A highly specialized book for professional growers. Not a gradener's book, for there is virtually no advice on selection, on cultivation, on growing. It is a very technical research job into the history of the rose, going back to classical days, exploring the origins and the sources, European and Oriental. The Belgian botanist Crepin's system of classification has been used, with later modifications incorporated. The characteristics of branches, prickles, foliage, flowers, fruit of successive species and sub-species are analyzed, and grouping (for chapter division) is made into species and hybrids. The main headings fall into Climbing Roses, Chinese Roses, Asiatics, French Roses, Old World Roses, North American Roses, Yellows, Hybrid Perpetuals, Hybrid Teas, and Polyanthus. A very full Bibliography offers suggestions of further studies. The market will be chiefly hybridizers.
