KIRKUS REVIEW

Royston Pike has had the experience of preparing some American encyclopedias for British readers, and in this collection of legend and ceremonies from here and there, the encyclopedist's concern with condensation and variety is evident. Arranged by the yearly calendar, these stories of both extinct and existing religious and secular ritual and holidays represent a luxuriant horde of world legend -- from the ancient world, India, the Orient, and Christianized Europe. The style is pleasant, chatty, but lacks a coordinating perspective. Fun to pick up- easy to put down.
