THE CHURCH, THE GOSPEL AND WAR by Rufus M.-Ed. Jones

THE CHURCH, THE GOSPEL AND WAR

By

Publisher: Harper

This is a restatement of the pacifist position by eleven British and American Christian leaders under the editorship of Rufus Jones, the noted Quaker. The first part of the book expounds the Christian pacifist faith, outlining the philosophical, religious and scriptural basis for the renunciation of war. In the second part attention is devoted to the position of the church on this question, quite obviously with the meeting of the World Council of Churches in mind. With so much talk of the imminence and inevitability of another war, it is salutary to be reminded of the fact that there are those who contend that no Christian can conscientiously have any part in war, and that they have reasons for their position which are difficult to refute. It is to be hoped that many besides those who are already convinced pacifists will read this book. They may not agree with the conclusions of the writers but they may find their own hysteria tempered or their own despair lightened.
