Historical fiction in a story of the early 1800's, of Payne, American actor and and his unrequited love for Mary Godwin, Shelley's mistress. A picture of a hostile London, of Payne's ups and downs, his back of writing of plays, of his associations with Washington Irving, of the writing of Home, Sweet Home and his failure to establish authorship, of Mary Godwin and her extraordinary history. Whether historically sound or not, it is first and foremost a good story, and should have a double sale, both to the fiction market and to those interested in pictures of the London of that period. Hughes in a fresh vein.
