The period is late 16th century. And the story centers around a lad, apprenticed to his uncle a goldsmith, whose workshop is on London Bridge. The threat of the Armada is hanging over prosperous London, and Giles twice runs foul of the Spanish spies and betters them. Eventually, he further earns the Queen's gratitude by helping take supplies to the fleet in the Channel. A rich period and the book has a fine sense of the pace and feel of the times.
