Frances the badger is back. She first appeared in Bedtime For Frances (1960, p. 280, J-142). Now she has a baby sister named Gloria, but Frances has no illusions about what this means in terms of her own personal comfort. Gloria requires dull quiet and takes up the parental time that would otherwise be spent on Frances. The only thing to do was to leave home, and so Frances left, bag and baggage, right after supper. She moved to her own apartment under the dining room table, a handy place from which to hear her parents grieving for her. They recalled some of her old songs and discussed how much Gloria needed the presence of an older sister. Lonesome Frances returned. Mrs. Hoban's pictures make Frances a huggy teddy bear of a badger living in middle class badger circumstances (comfortable furniture, but not grand) and the pointed dialogue is more acute than cute.
