I'M NOT COMPLAINING

This is an exceptional book, and deserves more than passing attention. A novel set in a typically drab English industrial town, and revolving around five teachers in an elementary school. Slum conditions, unemployment, radical uprisings supply undertones for the personal story. A year of life there is reconstructed, with definite vitality and pungent realism. The daily round, petty feuds, jealousies of thwarted romantic illusions. The youngest finds temporary escape in a shoddy affair; another, in communism; a third sees too clearly her own sharply grooved life to adjust to the chance of romance. Not a popular subject -- it went have a wide sale. But it is timely, in its reflections on educational and social problems, and the story of the five women is told with a sure though sometimes caustic touch. There is a market for it, if you analyze the book in relation to your customers. Go to it.
