BRAVE COMPANIONS

A thrilling story of rehabilitation and adjustment to blindness. Young Lieutenant Thomas Tolbert, casualty from the Pacific, is returned to the United States, blinded, probably permanently. Tom had always worked with dogs and loved them. Valor, the heroic shepherd dog that had been his to handle in battle, had saved Tom's life at cost of her own. His bitter struggle back, through Joey, Valor's puppy, is tough going for the softies. Joey comes back to Tom as a Seeing Eye dog and together they make a life of their own, normal, with life work and a forward looking attitude characteristic of the courageous war-wounded. Unsentimental, healthy but respectful, this book has unusual sensitivity in its approach to and handling of a big problem. It should make hopeful, inspiring reading for all-from 15 up-who read it.
