ANNABELLE

Tracking the fanciful course of an accidental journey, this is one of those sappy-sweet nothings that might as well be wordless. To begin with, Annabelle is a cute stuffed toy chimp, with a big pink bow on her head and a little red heart on her dress. Her passive tour begins when she falls out of Sarah's window; Spot next door carries her to the park, where a squirrel takes her up to its nest; then a crow grabs her and flies off, dropping her onto an elephant in a circus parade. . . whereupon a voice from the crowd cries ""That's my Annabelle!"" And Sarah, repossessed of the toy she hadn't missed, promises never to leave Annabelle alone again. Other such trips are endured for the sake of the scenery, but Bornstein's pale crayoned drawings are as vacuous as her story.
