KIRKUS REVIEW

An agreeable, unassuming book of Christmas recipes and dollops of folklore, blessedly free from the snowflake prose and determined yum-yumming that drive many a cook to Scroogedom. Mrs. Kainen highpoints the history: of American Christmas celebrations by geographical and ethic groups. Christmas recipes--from festive empanaditas (Spanish mincemeat pies) to pfeffernuesse to fruit cakes, pies and rousing punches--are tricky, rich (most Christmas dishes are) although there are some fairly simple cookies. A book for browsing, experimenting fine for cooks with stamina and plenty of the holiday spirit.
