A group of retired doctors and nurses have died after being admitted to New York’s Lafayette Medical Center. Coincidence or murder?

Already suffering from the flu, Dr. Nora Sternberg is called by an emergency-room resident with the news that her Aunt Selma, formerly a nurse at Lafayette, has fractured her hip but insists on being taken to another hospital. When Selma dies after a successful surgery, Nora is wracked with guilt and consumed with curiosity about why her aunt was so desperate to go elsewhere. As she and her taciturn family clean out Selma’s apartment, they find a list of nicknames and the obituary of a doctor who recently died at Lafayette. At the reading of the will, Nora learns some family secrets—especially about her Aunt Bunny, Selma’s legatee. Though Aunt Bunny’s been institutionalized for years, she provides a clue that helps Nora solve one mystery just in time for still another to arise. Drugs have been vanishing from locked hospital cabinets. The administration, fearing bad publicity, is doing an in-house investigation rather than calling the police. While her husband is in Norway directing a play, Nora spends her time hunting down the connection among the dead staff members. When she finally puts two and two together, she nearly becomes another of a wily killer’s victims.

A promising sleuth and reams of medical knowledge offset a thinly plotted debut.
