YOUNG WOMAN OF EUROPE

Here's an author who seems to have had better press than sales, and I doubt whether this novel betters either. It is the life story of Renate, self told, ""born between two races, two countries, two religions"". She traces her insecure childhood, the first world war, jobs in Berlin, the advent of Hitler and her father's arrest for murder. Her lover, too, David, charming, easy going philanderer, is a scapegoat for his half Jewish ancestry. She goes to England, twice attempting his rescue and finally getting him to England, when she realizes she no longer loves him and turns to an American, Tim. The plot seems tenuous, though she writes well of the aftermath of Hitlerism in the lives of little people.
