In a switch from adult mysteries Ruth Fenisong, with her usual finesse, has written a sympathetic children's story about a 10-year-old boy from Nassau who has never known any affection. Ron was left with his aunt and uncle in his infancy and has been reminded all his life that he is a burden. He has never attended school, spends his day toting packages and is beaten whenever he fails to bring home enough pennies or fails to carry out his odd jobs. On a trip to nearby Piper's Island, he escapes from his relatives and finds a family which provides the love and tenderness the boy needs. Ron is a spirited, quick-witted lad, whose adjustments to his new home are engagingly described. The calypso style dialogue flows naturally throughout this poignant, well-written story with an unusual setting.
