These brief, vivid thumbnail biographies will interest science-minded readers of high school age. The author has picked out high spots in the careers of nine great figures in medical history:- Vesalius in anatomy, Pare in surgery, Harvey, Jenner, Laenec, Semmelweis, Morton, Lister and Koch. A concluding chapter gives a quick summary of more recent developments as far even as Fleming's discovery of penicillin. The biographies are too brief for their subjects to come to life as human beings, but the drama of their conflict with tradition and the struggle towards truth does get through. This should be good for school libraries particularly.
