KIRKUS REVIEW

A companion to her earlier Great Men of Medicine (1947), this capsules and concentrates the stories behind medical discoveries. Here is Rontgen and the X-ray, Madame Curie and radium; from the pharmacists come the developments in pain-killing, and vitamin research; there is the war on diphtheria and yellow fever; and the last section deals with Panting's contribution to the treatment of diabetes -- insulin, and Fleming's pioneer work with penicillin. Throughout full attention is given to the long, weary road of investigation, experiment, trial and error; there is enough of personal story and medical history to fill in the picture of scientific progress. An excellent high school book for students with an interest in medicine.
