KIRKUS REVIEW

A 9-year old girl and a 12-year old boy are taken by their father on a three year trip on a whaler, and the excitement, adventures and activities on a ""spouter"" in the 1880's makes top reading. Cry baby Randy emerges as a regular girl; her brother too develops under the masculine influences of ship life; there's a wonderful sense of people and places, of blue-legged birds and lava islands, of strange gentle savages and queer gods and babies and courage and that good sense of life going on with zest no matter where it is staged. A grand book for background as well as story.
