Trudy Kloppenberg assigns every day a graded symbol in her diary, but a sample of her ""Thoughts for the Day"" -- ""Regular times for things are nice"" and ""Medium days are sort of nice once in a while"" -- reveals her preference for days that are decidedly on the quiet side. So Trudy savors the routine of closing out the school year, learns to enjoy the daily reading lessons she gives to little Tom Murphy who didn't pass, and visits old Mrs. Blonski who gives her fresh vegetables from the garden. Later in the summer when she goes camping with the family of her friend Sandra, Trudy overcomes her timidity and marks off a whole week of starred days, but even children who share her preference for tidiness and security probably look for a little more vicarious action from books -- or at least a more invigorating view of everyday pleasures than Trudy's endless, uninflected round of ""nice times.""
