Fourteen familiar American caterpillars are shown and named with a running commentary in child-like language which could be read by some second graders. The illustrations by Barbara Latham, in strong, sunlit colors, show various species in their favorite habitats, cabbages, flowers, leaves, trees. The tone is one of admiration. The little introduction closes as the caterpillars are about to become moths or butterflies. Natural science for the youngest listener or reader -- especially helpful for the child who is afraid of caterpillars.
