I'LL BE YOU AND YOU BE ME

by Ruth Krauss & illustrated by Maurice Sendak

Pub Date: Oct. 20th, 1954
ISBN: 0060284595

Ruth Krauss' imagination mellows with successive books. A Hole is to Dig (see P. 401-1952) left us unconvinced that it was really a child's book, but this collection of odd rhymes and sayings has everything; it tickles the funny bone while making grown-ups sense in a child's turn of phrase more than the surface meaning of the words. Predominant are themes of friendship, wishing, and the imaginative turnabouts that make real things real by making them what they are not. Examples may illustrate what gives the book its flavor such as... "...love is you give them a leg off your gingerbead man. No, two legs. And the " Or another "I wish I was a mouse so I could run over the table." Tiny as Maurice drawings are, they pack their own particular wallop. Good things come in small packages. Varied type sizes keyed to text.
