Excellent picture of a coast town-Annisquam- as the New Englanders endured the Embargo Acts and the way of 1812. Judy Lane, daughter of the friendly inn-keeper, was a lively, engaging girl of mischievous mind and good heart. Her bright adventures, her spirited curiosity, get her into every adventure, every corner and cupboard in the town. Judy and her friends are happy and busy, and their adventures are simple enough, until the war comes close to home and Judy's poise and courage work to save the town and her brother's ship. Ruth Holdberg proved in The Wonderful Voyage her gift for the detail that lower teen readers enjoy, and she created a background of picturesqueness and charm. Varied incidents, little escapades and very human children with rivalries, small jealousies and big loyalties.
