CANDLEMAS BAY

Another regional, coast story of fishing and family backgrounds. For the Ellises of sturdy, independent and competent ancestors- are confronted with the weakness of Guy, whose irresponsibility and drunkenness keep his wife and children in debt to his father. His death forces Jen to take boarders, to the full fledged horror of her sister-in-law Candace, and the results barely escape tragedy. For Candace in her rage against the new order is an instrument of near death and destruction, but her vicious selfishness ultimately brings happiness for Jen, and Candace's two sisters, and makes the death of Grampie Jebron Ellis a thing of full contentment. The fusing of the lifelines of Guy, Jen, Candace, Evelyn are a frame for the growing up of the boy, Jeb, and his passion for the men who have preceded him and their devotion to the life of the sea and fishing.
