This is the type of story I find myself distinctly prejudiced against, so perhaps I am not entirely fair to it. The recurrent play on words, rather cheap puns, fantastic misadventures in pseudo-modern-fairy-tale vein, with ogres and bandits and pirates and wizards, with magic sticks and magic chairs and a live ship's figurehead, etc. etc., only succeeded in irritating me. The postery illustrations did not help.
