A continuation of events in Ruth How's previous book, The Friendly Farm- in the same pleasant pastoral vein. Again Brian and Patsy spend the summer with Jim and the Freemans, reencounter Ben, the gypsy boy who has tamed and raised the ""magic"" colt Prince who follows him everywhere and has the peculiarity of being able to lure other horses. This time Ben's cousin Sim, as a friendly enemy, complicates Ben's life by stealing another horse. The mystery is solved in good English countryside atmosphere of trees and ruined abbeys and with sufficient attention paid to the development of proper attitudes towards gypsy tactics and the raising of horses.
