WHITETAIL by Rutherford G. Montgomery

The Colorado Prairie Dog, his first year, his habits, and his enemies are explored in this simple factual account of Whitetail's development. Welded together by a slight plot, Whitetail introduces the reader to this somewhat obscure to eastern children-species of rodent, his incredible ability to dig straight down into the ground, his meticulously organized community, his scampering playfulness, and his occasional instinct to join in a mob assassination of an individual member of the dog town. Marie Nonnast's illustrations provide a further basis for this informative, if somewhat tepid story of a prairie dog.
