The white mountaineer is a Rocky Mountain goat, and Mr. Montgomery is the man to put across some of the breed's remarkable characteristics through the narrative of Billy's first two years of life. He learns where to forage, how to fight his enemies, and acquires a surefootedness which enables him to make twenty foot ledge to ledge leaps with ease. Through the seasons, he is attacked by eagles, bears and big cats; there is the intermittent return of a prospector who eventually kills Billy's father; but there are times of greater serenity as well as security which Montgomery, a perceptive naturalist, interprets with a facile understanding.
