KIRKUS REVIEW

The story of a gray wolf, whose father was killed defending the mother against another wolf. Trained by his step-father to kill cattle, in spite of the mother wolf's intervention, which caused her death. Watching death overtake his brothers and sisters in one way and another, Speed learns the ways of men --and is the last of the great gray wolves. An Indian hunter pits his wits against Speed, unsuccessfully, until his dog mates with Speed and produces a puppy who eventually causes Speed's death. Nature lore in the drama of the ""lone wolf"" and his fight for existence. A good job.
