Tale of the West, when California was still Mexican owned and Americans were suspect (particularly when horses disappeared). Jed's brother was involved in such a situation, had been taken prisoner -- and Jed, apprentice in leather, runs away, hits the Sante Fe Trail, and with Tom Chad's help, has plenty of experience beaver trapping, hunting, escaping Indians, etc.-and eventually finds his brother.
