KIRKUS REVIEW

The Enchanted Loom ($24.95; Oct. 15, 1996; 162 pp.; 0-86140-381- 9): The discovery (in 1942) of 300 human skeletons high up in the Himalayas, and the local belief that to look on these remains brings death, provides both stimulus and narrative center for this vivid prose retelling of a traditional ballad. It's an Arabian Nightslike tale of a young nobleman, an arranged marriage frustrated by the appearances of various ghosts and spirits, and an arduous pilgrimage to a mountain shrine leading to further surprises and tests. Old-fashioned storytelling at its most appealing.
