KIRKUS REVIEW

In Monster Town, the “zombies are on their way to work,” briefcases and coffee cups clutched in green, rotting hands. Ghost writers are busy at the Monster Town Gazette, vampire bats staff the blood bank and Wolfman Jacques wields a fishbone comb in his barbershop. There is no textual narrative, just scenario after scenario in successive double-page spreads, but the illustrations provide a thin story line featuring a grinning child vampire who goes to school with Professor Igor, has his eyes examined by Dr. Cyclops (the chart reads, “E / EE / EEE / EEEK”) and takes his black cat to veterinarian Dr. Mummy for a checkup. Heshka has a lot of fun with each scene and provides plenty to look at, but with no real plot, kids aren’t likely to beg for second readings. (Picture book. 4-8)
