Author and publisher have none but themselves to blame if this gets lost because of that boring title which hides one of the best jobs of teaching in print that has come this way in a long time. The book has much to recommend it. It is brief -- each point is made and it is on to the next, whereas so many books that attempt to fill in the technical background of a given area spin out each explanation to tedious length with every point reinforced interminably. For another thing, this proceeds from a basic, familiar tool that came into common use in the 16th Century and continues its history in conjunction with instructions for its proper use on into the Space Age. The educational press has it that map reading and the use of the globe is still a major hurdle in the teaching of geography and history and a subject for constant review and the polishing of skills acquired: ""Here's the book they need.
