HALF THE WORLD'S CHILDREN

Mr. Keeny, who had done relief and rehabilitation work after both world wars, has been with UNICEF in Asia since 1950, has here written an informal record of his work- and UNICEF's- based on his reports to the organization. It begins in Bangkok where in the first six months the foundation for the next six years was laid and where they began their fight against death and disease in a program primarily for children but inevitably also including the adult population. The organization of medical teams, the installation of health centers and hospitals, ultimately the building of DDT and penicillin plants, the distribution of food and milk, all is part of this vital work which took them around Asia- and back again- in the attempt to reduce and eliminate yaws, malaria, tuberculosis, plague and famine. The facts are all there- but there are faces too- along with informal notations on people, homes, holidays, customs, etc. A book which may help to draw further attention to UNICEF'S impressive achievements to date.
