ARCHAEOLOGY

An oddly off-center introducton to an archaeologist's work, beginning with a sales talk on the attractions of archaeology as a career and then describing how sites are chosen, surveyed and excavated and how unknown writings are deciphered. At the expense of describing any actual or potential findings, which we would assume to be the real source of a digger's inspiration, Moscati directs attention to everyday procedures and contingencies (the use of filing cards for on-site notations, the need to line up funding, the discomforts of the field) and then takes up a number of professional issues--forgery, illicit trade, the scientist's obligation to publish his findings--which he never quite brings into focus at this level. And the random, eclectic distribution of photos makes no point at all.
