Sunny Jim learns the law of the jungle in the quiet farmyard where he was born. Mixed feelings of curiosity and fear prevent Sunny Jim from venturing out without the nearby support of other friendly animals. Until a fox almost makes a meal of him, Sunny Jim waits and waits for the right moment to come into his cathood. Having escaped the fox's snapping jaws, the kitten finds a mousechole all by himself, waits outside for the opportune moment and hunts down the first meal on his own. Sally Scott's black and white illustrations of Sunny Jim's growing up are utterly captivating and though the more squeamish set will side with the unfortunate mouse, the worldly wise will understand the necessities of animal survival.
