Psychological study of a Jewish butcher whose physical prowess makes him almost a Paul Bunyan character, so widely are his adventures told. He is in the black books of the Rabbi for not observing Kosher practices -- and when he repents, he abandons his profession and becomes a coachman, eventually marrying the master's daughter. An insult -- unintended -- to a police official results in his imprisonment, and he tries in vain to get pardoned, but serves out his term. A strange sort of book -- with a certain robust humor and lusty vitality. Not a novel in the usual sense, but a vivid characterization. Limited audience.
