A hurricane descends on the Davis family at the worst possible time. Mr. Davis is away while Mike, Tess and their mother are entertaining Peter, Mike's English pen-pal. It had been a carefully planned and long awaited visit. Everything had been centered on outdoor activities and cook-out meals. Plays on words are not the usual fare of easy readers, but Peter thinks that his hurricane visit is ""smashing"" as he and the Davis family hurl themselves into a scramble of activity to safeguard the house and the supplies from the rising waters of the creek. The text, while simply worded, does not suffer from the rigid structure and banal conversation so often encountered in books of this category.
