READY FOR THE TIGER

A novel of suspense"" is something of an anomaly-- actually it's a short order of sex and sentiment. Mike Webster, after 14 years, finally catches up with his old ""Buddy-roo"" on the Tokyo-Pusan air run and settles his private war debt in a bowling alley in L.A. with a knife. Taken in hand, literally, by a young punk, Eddie, Mike goes to live for a couple of days with Eddie and his sister, a prematurely mature sixteen, while Detective Wollins keeps an eye on the three of them. For the first time Mike finds someone to love as well as hate even though it can't and it doesn't last... Some surprisingly inflammatory scenes precede the explosive twist at the finish, and it's all told from the side of the mouth. Still, as he runs, you read.
