KIRKUS REVIEW

**Guess what Mehilda won in a contest to name a kangaroo? She won the kangaroo himself! And this zany trifle takes it from there through bizarre buffoonery depicting her apartment-dwelling family bedeviled by Sam, her prize. Leonard Weisgard's wonderful daffy drawings of the woes and throes that ensue as a result of Mehilda' enterprise are joyously, uproariously giddy. He has rare ability in stylizing the elements of a child's world for harmony or hilarity as story or format dictate. Obdurate at first about parting with her pet, Mehilda agrees finally to relinquish him to a city zoo. Although stitching on the paper over board edition is not as sturdy as the story, a JLG cloth edition is available to subscribers at no extra cost. You'll ""roo"" the day if you don't add this to your list of musts. And nothing could be gayer for a Christmas stocking.
