...abound in quantity and astound in scope. This one-volume edition, comprising the author's three books on San Francisco (San Fran San Francis Kale and The Streets of San Francis) is a cavalcade of poets, dreamers, beggars, millionaires, scholars, thieves and adventurers whose escapades have in some way contributed to and justified the fabled reputation of that Mecca of the Goldenwest. The gold rushers and the peripheral hangers-on who capitalized not on the gold but on the rush; the era of fire and the competitive spirit of the fire companies; the opulent retreat to the hills which resulted in a most concentrated hotel display; the cable cars -- these phases are personified by their illustrious participants -- Ambrose Bierce, Lotta Crabtree, Black Bart, Frank Norris, Jack London, Robert Louis Stevenson, James Lick and many others. The enthusiasm and charm which are rendered by these cuttings prove that Mr. Dickson, script writer for an NBC program on San Francisco history, is a devoted and loyal San Franciscan and will be taken to heart by members of that clan.
