INTEGRATION OF MAN AND SOCIETY IN LATIN AMERICA

Prepared under the aegis of the Catholic Inter-American Cooperation Program, this collection of papers covers a broad sweep of subjects including demography, the role of religion, labor and education, and Latin America's international relations. Despite the title, the theme often serves to paper over essays taking discrete, divergent tacks. Some of the selections are very good (e.g. Professor Stycos on birth control), others routine (e.g. John Santos' discussion of personal values in the Latin American milieu). The collection serves the praiseworthy purposes of bringing the work of younger Latin American scholars before a larger public and carrying on the relatively new tradition of progressive Catholic thought in a region where the Church not long ago was the intolerant mainstay of the repressive status quo.
