The background of the life of itinerant players in New York state of Erie Canal days makes colorful decor for the story of Drurie Andrews, foundling, who plays minor parts in the Thalia Dramatic Company productions. Her foster parents had conditioned her into a career of man-hating; an older woman, whose own way of life isn't what you'd call moral, protects her from her own innocence, fights her battles. And Jan Quintard, ex-Harvard gadabout, finds his armor pierced by Drurie's naivete, and the pair travel many a rocky mile to solution of their romance. Lots of incident -- unusual background- not much suspense for a story with good regional and period details.
