THE ERIE CANAL by Samuel Hopkins Adams

Two Landmark books, The Santa Fe Trail and The Pony Express and an adult novel about theatricals on the Canal, Banner by the Wayside- are all in Mr. Adams' past to recommend this. In knowingly humorous vein, the old Erie comes alive again in many respects. History's exigencies and the westward push brought pressure on government powers to build the waterway. Vividly painted incidents reveal the political squabbles along with the great sweep of first, hard work, and then, extensive commercial and private travel that poured into it- in a successful recapturing of a colorful segment of America's past.
