Sam"" Shoemaker, now rector of Calvary Church, Pittsburgh, has many volumes on various aspects of personal religion to his credit. His many friends enjoy and profit from the forthright, vigorous and evangelical enthusiasm with which he describes the Christian way of life, well illustrated by the changed lives of the many he has known in all walks of life. His is a ""contagious"" personality, and joy is the gift that reaches from him through the printed page to the reader. Here he writes of the place and power of the Holy Spirit in the Church and in the life of man, describing a way of readiness toward God which alone is prelude to the spiritual awakening which only God himself can bring to pass. He wants his words ""to be more suggestive than dogmatic, more provocative than final, more directed toward experience than theology"". He is often critical of and impatient with the Church, but only because he loves her, and longs again to see her ""filled with the Holy Spirit and with Fire"".
