A comprehensive survey of Brazilian literature, which is a guide to its historical and cultural origins,- European, Portuguese in particular, and indigenous. This covers the character of Brazilian culture, people, and language. It has for a thesis production of truly modern writing from the tropics, as exemplified in the local development, from 1500 to the present day, and presents many unfamiliar, a few familiar names and titles. The acceptance of miscegenation as an asset analysis of writer and work; contrast of national and popular heritage, this points the way to new schools and new talents. With its appended footnotes and selected background reading in English on Brazil, this is of first importance in literature classes, secondarily in amplifying specific interest in Brazil. Putnam has a flair for giving immediacy and liveliness to his surveys of the literary scene. The difficulty here (as compared with his study of the left bank writers in Paris a generation ago) is a certain apathy towards Latin American writing on the part of the general reader.
