THE PASSIONATE SHEPHERD

Ten short stories display definite styling, deftly turned humor and observation of the warps in adult relationships and natures, and combine into a whole of civilized, contemporary sketches. Several have a common denominator in the academic world, the title story centers around a happy refuge from ivied walls, another has to do with the blackening of a younger instructor's reputation, a third sensitizes a foreign professor's suspicions of a newcomer; others have to do with a man's memories of his childhood, a boy betrayed by his brother paying off the girl who had jilted him, a girl's suicide when she loses her faith in her lover, the retracing of a crime -- and retribution, and two triangles that have four sides. A collection of distinction.
