Sivulich, a children's librarian, has perfected the group participation genre, and to ensure the same success for other story hour groups she supplies italicized, brown type directions (""dive in and do the crawl stroke. . . make slurpy sounds"") along with the black type text. Beginning ""I'm going on a bear hunt and I'm not afraid,"" the barefoot and overalled young hunter proceeds up a tree, across a lake, through a swamp, and into a cave, then -- after a glimpse of the bear (two eyes in the scratchy dark) -- through the same route in reverse until ""Oh, I'm home at last. I went on a bear hunt and I wasn't afraid."" Glen Rounds' sure shootin' pictures add a backwoods American flavor.
