HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH-SPEAKING PEOPLES

Two scholars, one English, one American, have done an extensive collaboration in this much needed cross sectioning history of the English-speaking peoples. At this time it is particularly valuable, since it succeeds in showing the stream of history in focus, rather than the sharp differentiation between English history, Colonial history, and history of the United States. Our roots in English political, social and economic backgrounds are evident; this sort of history should help towards better understanding between our peoples. Ardent patriots on both sides will feel that favoritism has shown; the fact that both sides could accuse is evident of the objectivity of treatment. One could wish for more of the economic aspects in relation to history, more of the social, but after all, an amazing amount is covered in a one volume work, and the establishment of a sense of continuity is a step in the right direction. Definitely a background book, for the average citizen, for reference, for schools and colleges. Not a book which attempts to solve the problems of the future except by making for better understanding of the past.
